WHO AM I?
I'm Sarah, an experienced consultant and UX Designer. I've just completed my Master of Human-Computer Interaction degree at Carnegie Mellon University and I am starting to pack up my life in Pittsburgh while I find the next adventure in my career. As a UX Designer, I want to design interactions that solve the underlying problems that people experience. I chose to work in technology because it is a field that is always changing and there is always something to learn. I want to always challenge myself to design better and think differently than I did yesterday.
THE CHALLENGE
Fueled by coffee and Amazon Prime, I discovered David Sherwin's book Creative Workshop: 80 challenges to sharpen your design skills.
I thought about how busy I have been for the past 12 months during the rigorous program that is the CMU Master of HCI, and I want to stay sharp and keep busy as I search for my next role. The challenges in David's book are limited by time and encourage a focus on the process rather than the final product. I want to use these challenges to sharpen my design skills, inspire creative thinking in short timeframes, and experience both failures and success.
HOW IT WILL WORK
There are 80 challenges split up by categories: Foundation, Execution, Materiality, Instruction, Observation, Innovation, Interpretation. Each challenge is unique and has a time limit between 30 and 180 minutes for planning and sketching, and then an unspecified time to continue with polished designs if desired. After each challenge, I'll post my process and tools, final design, and thoughts on the experience.
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Join me in this challenge by following along, providing your feedback and comments, and purchasing the book and do the challenges along side me!
